Winter Motoring

You are advised by the government in winter to check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in adverse weather conditions unless your journey is essential. If it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey.

Before you set off for your journey, thoroughly defrost your windows. It is advisable not to throw hot water over your windows as this can lead them to cracking. If you don’t have any de-icer then tepid warm water will work, but be quick scraping off the ice to prevent it from re-freezing.

In winter its best to be prepared for the more adverse weather conditions and get your car ready for the winter weather. At the start of autumn you should start to prepare for the winter months.

We recommend the following checks are carried out, however if you are unsure what you are exactly looking for then we are able to carry out a winter service for you.

VISIBILITY: Check that all your vehicles bulbs are working correctly, indicators, fog lights, side lights, brake lights, number plate lights, and headlights. Be sure to check the lenses for any cracks. Check that all your wiper blades clear the screen effectively.

TYRES: Keeping your cars tyres at the right pressure is important all year round but especially so in winter. Ice seriously affects your car’s ability to grip the road and this can be worsened by damaged or unevenly worn tyres. The law requires you have a tread depth of 1.6mm, we strongly recommend that you change them at 2mm to ensure a good tyre grip whilst driving. Check that all tyres are at the right tyre pressure to your vehicle’s manufacturer’s specification, which can be found in your car’s hand book.

BRAKES: Be aware for any changes in your braking performance or any squeaks which may occur. If you have noticed any changes or if you are in any doubt then bring your vehicle to us and we will be happy to inspect them for you.

FLUID LEVELS: Keep checking all of your levels all year round but be extra vigilant in the winter months, and top up whenever necessary to avoid damage to the engine. However, when topping up be careful you don’t exceed the maximum mark for all the different levels.

AIR CONDITIONING: Helps to demist your car’s screen quickly and more efficient. So ensure you have enough air conditioning gas to last you through the winter months.

BATTERY:Ensuring your battery is fully charged helps to reduce the risk of your vehicle not starting. Winter puts more strain on your battery as you are using a lot more electrical consumables, e.g. wipers and screen de-froster.

CAR KIT: We recommend that you carry the following in the boot of your car all though the year as a precaution as you never know when you might need them.

·         De-icer

·         Ice scraper

·         Working torch
